Ryzen 9 270 vs 8945HS: Is AMD’s New Name Actually a New Processor?

AMD’s processor names do not always make it easy to tell whether a chip is genuinely new.
The Ryzen 9 270 belongs to AMD’s newer Ryzen 200 Series, while the Ryzen 9 8945HS belongs to the Ryzen 8000 Series. Judging only by their names, buyers might reasonably expect the Ryzen 9 270 to introduce a different CPU architecture, faster integrated graphics or a more powerful AI engine.
That is not what the official specifications show.
Short answer: the Ryzen 9 270 and Ryzen 9 8945HS are effectively the same class of processor. Both use AMD’s Zen 4 architecture and Hawk Point design, with 8 CPU cores, 16 threads, Radeon 780M graphics and a 16-TOPS NPU.
AMD does not officially describe the Ryzen 9 270 as a “renamed 8945HS.” However, the two official specification sheets are so closely matched that Mini PC buyers should not expect a major performance difference based on the processor name alone.
The more important differences will usually come from the Mini PC surrounding the processor: cooling, configured power limits, memory, SSD capacity, networking and expansion ports.

What actually changed?
The most obvious change is the product name and the processor family in which AMD positions the chip.
The Ryzen 9 8945HS is part of the Ryzen 8000 Series. AMD introduced the Ryzen 9 270 later as part of the Ryzen 200 Series, announced at CES 2025 for mainstream productivity systems.
AMD’s announcement describes the Ryzen 200 Series as continuing the company’s Zen 4 architecture rather than introducing a new CPU architecture. The Ryzen 9 270 remained at the top of that range with 8 cores, 16 threads, Radeon 780M graphics and a 16-TOPS NPU. AMD’s Ryzen 200 Series announcement supports this positioning.
The name changed, but the following major components did not:
- CPU architecture
- Core and thread count
- Base and boost frequencies
- Cache
- Integrated GPU
- GPU core count and frequency
- NPU performance
- Memory support
- PCIe generation
- Configurable power range
Based on those matching specifications, it is reasonable to treat the Ryzen 9 270 as a refreshed or renamed version of the same Hawk Point platform—not as a new generation comparable to moving from Zen 4 to Zen 5.

Is the Ryzen 9 270 faster than the 8945HS?
AMD’s official specifications do not provide a hardware-level reason to expect the Ryzen 9 270 to be consistently faster than the Ryzen 9 8945HS.
Both processors have the same:
- 4.0GHz base frequency;
- 5.2GHz maximum boost frequency;
- 8-core, 16-thread configuration;
- 45W default TDP;
- 35–54W configurable TDP range;
- 24MB combined L2 and L3 cache.
In two differently designed Mini PCs, one processor may still appear faster than the other. That result would not necessarily come from the processor model.
Mini PC performance is heavily affected by:
Cooling capacity
A Mini PC with a larger heatsink and better airflow may maintain higher clock speeds during long rendering, compiling or encoding workloads.
A smaller system with conservative fan settings may reduce power sooner, even if it uses the same processor.
Configured power limits
Manufacturers can configure the processor within AMD’s supported power range. A system configured closer to 54W may behave differently from one designed around 35W.
Memory configuration
The Radeon 780M uses system memory instead of dedicated video memory. Memory speed, memory channels and firmware configuration can therefore influence graphics performance.
Firmware and drivers
BIOS settings, AMD chipset drivers and graphics drivers can also affect results.
For this reason, benchmark numbers from two unrelated systems should not be interpreted as a pure Ryzen 9 270 versus 8945HS comparison unless cooling, memory and power settings are controlled.
Do they have the same Radeon 780M graphics?
Yes. AMD lists the same Radeon 780M configuration for both processors:
- RDNA 3 graphics architecture;
- 12 graphics cores;
- maximum 2,800MHz graphics frequency;
- DirectX 12 support;
- DisplayPort 2.1 capability;
- support for multiple displays.
For Mini PC buyers, that means the Ryzen 9 270 does not introduce a new integrated GPU generation over the Ryzen 9 8945HS.
Expected gaming and graphics capability should therefore be broadly similar when the processors are used with comparable memory, cooling and power configurations.
The Radeon 780M is well suited to:
- everyday productivity;
- high-resolution desktop displays;
- media playback;
- photo editing;
- lighter video-editing projects;
- esports and less-demanding games at sensible settings;
- older AAA games with adjusted resolution and quality settings.
It is not equivalent to a modern high-end discrete graphics card. Buyers who need demanding 1440p gaming, GPU rendering or professional 3D workloads should consider a Mini PC with external GPU support.
Does Ryzen 9 270 have better AI performance?
No meaningful NPU upgrade is shown in AMD’s published specifications.
Both the Ryzen 9 270 and Ryzen 9 8945HS provide up to 16 TOPS of NPU performance through the first-generation AMD XDNA AI engine.
This can accelerate compatible local AI features, including selected background effects, image processing and software functions optimized for AMD Ryzen AI.
However, neither processor’s 16-TOPS NPU meets the 40-plus-TOPS NPU threshold Microsoft describes for many Copilot+ PC features. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC guidance identifies a 40+ TOPS NPU as a key requirement.
This does not mean the processors cannot run AI applications. AI workloads may use the CPU, Radeon GPU or NPU depending on the software. It means buyers should not confuse “Ryzen AI support” with full Copilot+ PC qualification.
Ryzen 9 270 vs 8945HS for gaming
At the processor level, this comparison is effectively a tie.
Both chips combine Zen 4 CPU cores with the same Radeon 780M integrated graphics. Differences between complete Mini PCs will matter more than the name printed on the CPU specification page.
When choosing between two systems, compare:
- Memory speed and configuration
- Cooling design
- Available performance modes
- Driver and BIOS support
- OCuLink or USB4 eGPU support
- Internal SSD expansion
- Display outputs
A well-designed Ryzen 9 270 Mini PC may be a better gaming purchase than a basic 8945HS system—not because the Ryzen 9 270 is a faster chip, but because the computer may provide better cooling or more useful expansion.
The reverse can also be true.
Ryzen 9 270 vs 8945HS for content creation
Both processors are appropriate for CPU-heavy productivity and moderate creative workloads, including:
- photo editing;
- code compilation;
- music production;
- multitasking;
- light-to-moderate video editing;
- office applications;
- browser-based creative tools.
For more demanding video editing, 3D rendering or GPU-accelerated production, compare the complete system rather than focusing on the CPU name.
Useful system-level features include:
- 32GB or more memory;
- multiple PCIe 4.0 SSD slots;
- fast external storage connectivity;
- USB4;
- OCuLink for an external GPU;
- 2.5GbE networking;
- support for several high-resolution monitors.
The specification that matters more: system expansion
The processor comparison alone does not explain whether a Mini PC will remain useful for several years.
For example, the NiPoGi G2 Pro Ryzen 9 270 Mini PC combines the processor with:
- 32GB LPDDR5 memory;
- a 1TB PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD;
- three M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 storage slots;
- OCuLink external GPU expansion;
- two USB4 ports;
- two 2.5GbE Ethernet ports;
- support for four displays.
Those features can produce a more meaningful difference than choosing between two processors with nearly identical specifications.
OCuLink, for example, provides a dedicated route for adding an external desktop graphics card through a compatible eGPU dock. The internal Radeon 780M can handle normal desktop and lighter graphics tasks, while the external GPU offers an upgrade path for more demanding gaming, rendering or AI workloads.
Similarly, three M.2 slots give users more storage flexibility than many Mini PCs with only one or two drives.
Which processor should you buy?
Do not pay substantially more simply because one Mini PC says “Ryzen 9 270” and another says “Ryzen 9 8945HS.”
Choose the Ryzen 9 270 system when:
- its price is competitive;
- it has better cooling;
- it offers more useful ports;
- you need OCuLink;
- you need additional M.2 storage;
- you need dual 2.5GbE networking;
- it has better warranty or support.
Choose the Ryzen 9 8945HS system when:
- it costs less for a comparable configuration;
- its cooling and power settings are well documented;
- it offers upgradeable memory that you need;
- it already provides all the storage and ports required by your workflow.
If the two systems are otherwise equivalent, expected CPU, integrated graphics and NPU capabilities should be very similar.

Ryzen 9 270 vs 8945HS: final verdict
The Ryzen 9 270 has a newer name, but it is not a major new processor generation.
AMD’s official specifications show that the Ryzen 9 270 and Ryzen 9 8945HS share the same Hawk Point platform, Zen 4 CPU architecture, core count, clock speeds, Radeon 780M graphics, 16-TOPS NPU and power range.
The practical buying conclusion is simple:
Choose the better Mini PC, not the newer processor name.
Cooling, memory implementation, storage expansion, networking, display support, USB4 and OCuLink will normally make a greater difference to ownership than the distinction between “Ryzen 9 270” and “Ryzen 9 8945HS.”
For users who want Radeon 780M graphics together with OCuLink, dual USB4, dual 2.5GbE and three M.2 storage slots, the NiPoGi G2 Pro offers a configuration designed around expansion rather than processor naming alone.
