Ryzen AI 400 vs Ryzen 9 8945HS vs Ryzen 7 7735HS: Should You Upgrade Your Mini PC?

08 Sep 2026 0 comments

AMD Ryzen AI 400 processors are beginning to appear in Mini PCs, bringing Zen 5 CPU cores, Radeon 800M integrated graphics and an XDNA 2 neural processing unit.

But does that make every Ryzen AI 400 Mini PC a worthwhile upgrade from a Ryzen 9 8945HS or Ryzen 7 7735HS system?

The short answer is no.

Ryzen AI 400 is a processor family rather than a single performance level. A Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 can provide a meaningful upgrade in graphics, multicore performance and local AI capability. A lower-tier Ryzen AI 7 445, however, is not automatically faster than an eight-core Ryzen 9 8945HS or Ryzen 7 7735HS in every workload.

The short answer

  • Ryzen 9 8945HS owners usually do not need to upgrade for office work, web browsing, media playback, coding or ordinary 1080p gaming.
  • Ryzen 7 7735HS owners have more reason to upgrade, particularly for modern integrated graphics, Copilot+ features and local AI applications.
  • Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 is the clearest performance upgrade because it combines 12 CPU cores, Radeon 890M graphics and a 55-TOPS NPU.
  • Ryzen AI 7 445 is not a universal upgrade. It has six CPU cores and only four Radeon 840M compute units.
  • Upgrade based on the exact processor, Mini PC cooling system, memory configuration, ports and price—not the “Ryzen AI 400” name alone.

Ryzen AI 400 is not one performance tier

AMD’s Ryzen AI 400 range contains processors with very different core counts and integrated GPUs.

Processor CPU cores/threads Architecture Integrated GPU GPU CUs NPU
Ryzen 7 7735HS 8/16 Zen 3+ Radeon 680M 12 No dedicated NPU
Ryzen 9 8945HS 8/16 Zen 4 Radeon 780M 12 Up to 16 TOPS
Ryzen AI 7 445 6/12 Zen 5 + Zen 5c Radeon 840M 4 Up to 50 TOPS
Ryzen AI 7 450 8/16 Zen 5 + Zen 5c Radeon 860M 8 Up to 50 TOPS
Ryzen AI 9 465 10/20 Zen 5 + Zen 5c Radeon 880M 12 Up to 50 TOPS
Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 12/24 Zen 5 + Zen 5c Radeon 890M 16 Up to 55 TOPS

The Ryzen AI 400 specifications above come from AMD’s official 2026 product announcement and Ryzen AI 400 product documentation.

The most important takeaway is that the model number matters.

For example, the Radeon 840M inside the Ryzen AI 7 445 has only four graphics compute units. By comparison, the older Radeon 780M and Radeon 680M both have 12 compute units. Architecture and clock speed also affect performance, but buyers should not assume that every Radeon 800M GPU is faster than every Radeon 700M or 600M GPU.

Ryzen AI 400 vs Ryzen 9 8945HS

The Ryzen 9 8945HS remains a strong Mini PC processor. According to AMD’s official specifications, it provides:

  • Eight Zen 4 CPU cores and 16 threads
  • A boost clock of up to 5.2GHz
  • Radeon 780M integrated graphics with 12 compute units
  • DDR5-5600 and LPDDR5X memory support
  • A configurable 35–54W power range
  • A first-generation Ryzen AI NPU rated at up to 16 TOPS

For general computing, the 8945HS is not suddenly obsolete. Eight Zen 4 cores remain more than sufficient for office applications, browser-heavy multitasking, software development, video meetings and home entertainment.

When an 8945HS owner should keep the current Mini PC

Keep the 8945HS system if you mainly use it for:

  • Microsoft Office and web applications
  • Programming and development environments
  • 4K video playback
  • Home server or media-server tasks
  • Photo editing
  • Light video editing
  • Esports and less demanding games
  • Remote desktop or cloud-based AI services

In these workloads, moving to a Ryzen AI 400 Mini PC may improve benchmark results without significantly changing the everyday experience.

When an 8945HS owner should consider upgrading

An upgrade becomes more reasonable when moving to a high-end Ryzen AI 400 processor such as the Ryzen AI 9 465 or Ryzen AI 9 HX 470, especially if you need:

  • A 50–55 TOPS NPU for supported local AI applications
  • Microsoft Copilot+ PC features
  • More than eight CPU cores
  • Faster Radeon 880M or Radeon 890M graphics
  • Better performance in heavily threaded creation workloads
  • A newer Mini PC platform with the ports you specifically require

The upgrade case is much weaker if the replacement uses a Ryzen AI 7 445. Its newer architecture and stronger NPU do not change the fact that it has fewer CPU cores and a substantially smaller integrated GPU than the 8945HS.

Ryzen AI 400 vs Ryzen 7 7735HS

The Ryzen 7 7735HS is older but still capable. AMD lists it as an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 3+ processor with a boost clock of up to 4.75GHz and Radeon 680M integrated graphics. It supports DDR5-4800 or LPDDR5-6400 memory and operates within a 35–54W range.See the official AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS specifications.

Unlike the 8945HS and Ryzen AI 400 series, the 7735HS does not contain a dedicated Ryzen AI NPU.

Nevertheless, the 7735HS is not automatically slower than every Ryzen AI 400 processor. In a third-party comparison, Notebookcheck found that the eight-core 7735HS could remain competitive against the six-core Ryzen AI 7 445 in several CPU workloads.Read the Notebookcheck comparison.

That result should not be treated as a comparison of every possible Mini PC. Power limits, cooling and memory can change performance. It does demonstrate why buyers should compare exact processors rather than relying on generation names.

When a 7735HS owner should keep the current Mini PC

There is little urgency to upgrade if the Mini PC already handles:

  • Office and administrative work
  • Multiple browser windows
  • 4K streaming
  • Video conferencing
  • Digital signage
  • Home automation
  • File-server duties
  • Light gaming at acceptable settings

A processor upgrade will not solve limitations caused by insufficient RAM, a nearly full SSD, poor Wi-Fi or software configuration. In some cases, upgrading storage or optimizing the operating system offers better value than replacing the entire PC.

When a 7735HS owner should upgrade

A Ryzen AI 400 Mini PC becomes more attractive if you want:

  • Local AI features requiring a modern NPU
  • Copilot+ compatibility
  • Higher integrated-GPU performance
  • Faster video encoding or creative workflows
  • Improved performance per watt
  • A newer connectivity configuration
  • More headroom for future software

For a noticeable upgrade, look toward Ryzen AI 9 465 or Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 rather than automatically choosing the least expensive Ryzen AI 400 model.

Radeon 890M vs 780M vs 680M

For Mini PCs without a dedicated graphics card, integrated-GPU selection can matter more than small differences in CPU clock speed.

Radeon 680M

The Radeon 680M remains suitable for desktop applications, 4K media playback and lighter games. Modern demanding games generally require lower resolutions, reduced graphics settings or upscaling.

Radeon 780M

The Radeon 780M improves on the 680M and remains a capable integrated GPU for compact computers. It is a balanced option for users who want productivity performance and occasional 1080p gaming without a discrete GPU.

Radeon 890M

The Radeon 890M has 16 compute units, compared with 12 on the Radeon 780M and Radeon 680M. It is the most compelling Ryzen AI 400 option in this comparison for gaming and GPU-accelerated workloads.

However, actual Mini PC performance also depends on:

  • Memory bandwidth
  • Single-channel versus dual-channel memory
  • LPDDR5X versus replaceable DDR5
  • Configured power limits
  • Cooling capacity
  • Firmware settings
  • Driver versions

A well-cooled 8945HS Mini PC with fast dual-channel memory may deliver a better experience than a poorly configured newer system.

Is the Ryzen AI 400 NPU a reason to upgrade?

For most buyers, the NPU should be treated as a specialised feature rather than a general speed upgrade.

An NPU accelerates compatible AI workloads at lower power consumption than running the same task continuously on the CPU or GPU. Ryzen AI 400 processors provide 50 to 60 NPU TOPS depending on the model, while the Ryzen 9 8945HS provides up to 16 TOPS.

That difference matters when software can actually use the NPU.

Consider upgrading for the NPU if you use or plan to use:

  • Copilot+ PC features
  • Supported local transcription tools
  • Background removal and camera effects
  • Compatible creative AI applications
  • Local AI workflows optimised for AMD XDNA 2

Do not upgrade purely because the new processor advertises more TOPS if your applications still rely on the CPU, GPU or cloud. NPU TOPS do not represent total system performance and cannot be used to predict gaming frame rates or ordinary application speed.

Upgrade decision by use case

Use case 7735HS owner 8945HS owner
Office and web browsing Keep Keep
4K media playback Keep Keep
Coding and development Usually keep Keep
Home server Keep unless efficiency is critical Keep
Light 1080p gaming Usually keep Keep
Demanding iGPU gaming Consider 890M Consider 890M
Video editing Consider AI 9 465/HX 470 Upgrade only for heavier workloads

Cloud-based AI tools Keep Keep

What first-time Mini PC buyers should do

People buying a new Mini PC should not automatically choose the newest processor.

A Ryzen 7 7735HS Mini PC can still offer better value when the priority is office work, entertainment and mainstream multitasking. The Ryzen 9 8945HS remains attractive for stronger CPU and Radeon 780M performance without paying for an NPU that may go unused.

Ryzen AI 400 makes the most sense when the price difference is reasonable and the buyer can identify a real benefit from its NPU, newer integrated GPU or additional CPU cores.

Before purchasing, compare the complete system:

  • Exact processor model
  • Installed RAM and upgrade options
  • SSD capacity and additional M.2 slots
  • USB4 or other high-speed interfaces
  • Display outputs
  • Ethernet speed
  • Wireless connectivity
  • Cooling and noise
  • Warranty and local shipping
  • Total price including memory and storage

You can compare currently available NIPOGI Mini PCs by processor, memory, storage and connectivity. Checking the live collection page also avoids selecting a configuration that is no longer available.

Final verdict

Ryzen AI 400 is a meaningful platform update, but it is not an automatic upgrade for every 8945HS or 7735HS owner.

Ryzen 9 8945HS owners should generally keep their current Mini PC unless they specifically need Copilot+, a much faster NPU, additional CPU cores or Radeon 890M graphics.

Ryzen 7 7735HS owners have a stronger reason to upgrade, particularly for local AI and more demanding integrated-graphics workloads. Even so, the 7735HS remains adequate for office work, media playback, home-server use and everyday multitasking.

Most importantly, compare individual processors. A Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 is a substantial step up from these older chips in several areas. A Ryzen AI 7 445 is a different class of product and should not be treated as a universal replacement simply because it has a newer name.
